No brewery in the Republic of San Marino is recorded before the 2000s. The state on Monte Titano was known mainly for wine and olive oil, and under the convention of friendship and good neighbourhood signed with Italy in 1939 it forms a customs union with its neighbour, so the beer drunk there was Italian or came through Italy.
The first brewery was Amarcord. It began in Rimini in 1996 or 1997 as a brewpub run by a group of friends and took its name from the Romagna dialect word for 'I remember' and Fellini's film. In the early 2000s it gave up the brewpub and direct sales to make bottled craft beer for the market; in 2001 the brand was sold to a company based in San Marino, and the brewery moved into a newer, more modern plant in the Republic, at Falciano in the municipality of Serravalle. From there La Tabachera, a 10 percent brown ale, was imported into the USA by Elite Brands of Kalamazoo, Michigan, by 2008, and in that year Mi dòna won third prize in its category among 140 beers at the World Expo of Beer in Frankenmuth, Michigan. In 2009 production went back to Italy: a new brewery at Apecchio in the Marche, using the Valdimeti spring owned by the Rimini water group La Galvanina, whose president Rino Mini was named its new owner, was opened on 30 May 2009. The company's own site says the Bagli family has run it since 1997. Birra Amarcord S.p.A., registered in Rimini, is reported at about 25,000 hectolitres a year.
Titanbräu was the next. The brewer Andrea Amantini began production in December 2010 under the company name Birrificio Artigianale Sammarinese, at Falciano (Via del Piazzaro 11). In March 2012 it made 500 hectolitres a year, and that year its Rossa took third place in the German-style strong lager category of Unionbirrai's Birra dell'Anno. The range is a Bionda (Helles, 4.9 percent), a Rossa (7.5), an Ambrata (5.6), a Weizen, a Fonte Vecchia pils and a Tipopils. A travel writer who visited in November 2025 reports that the beers are no longer brewed on site but in Pesaro, Italy, and that the brewery has a shop at Falciano.
Birrificio Abusivo grew out of home brewing. Five Sammarinese friends founded Birrificio 5 S.r.l. at the end of 2014 around the recipes of the brewer Ivan Pelliccioni and made the first batches in 2015 on a 100-litre plant; that plant was offered for sale in July 2016, and the brewery at Domagnano (Via XXV Marzo) later grew to a 3-hectolitre brewhouse. One of the five, Enea Bruschi, died in 2019. Italian prizes came from 2016, two Slow Food guides name the brewery, and in November 2020 its smoked Nostalgia di Bamberga won silver at the European Beer Star in Germany. It made 140 hectolitres and 20,000 bottles in 2020, and a 2023 report puts its output at 250 hectolitres a year. Speak Easy (a pilsner), Illecita (an English bitter) and Ambigua (a red beer in the Belgian brown-ale style) are the best known.
In October 2026 BeerAdvocate lists two breweries in the Republic, Abusivo and the Birrificio Artigianale Sammarinese; Brookston counted one in 2012 and ApeTime two in 2023. Abusivo called itself the only brewery of San Marino in 2020, a claim that sits badly with Titanbräu's continuing trade. A visitor in November 2025 found Abusivo's website out of order and its Facebook page the only sign of life, with the beers on sale in several bars and shops in the city of San Marino. Amarcord has stayed in Italy since 2009, but its tank-fresh beer was served at the Draft pub in San Marino in 2018.
