Andorra has no old brewing tradition: its high valleys grow neither cereals nor hops, and for decades the beer in its bars was that of the big industrial brands. The only earlier local beer remembered is l'Andorrana, made in Escaldes around 1950 and drunk in a couple of bars.
Brewing in the country began with Alpha, founded at the end of 2010 in La Cortinada by Toni Medina and a partner and counted as the first craft brewery of Andorra; some sources date the project to 2007, with the first beer sold in 2011. Around 2014 Alpha started again at the Borda Callisa near Arinsal, with a pub above a small brewhouse of 230 litres a batch and beers named after legends of the parishes.
Boris Craft Beer followed about 2015, first in the centre of Andorra la Vella, with the Era Bauró beer bar of the old town, then in La Cortinada, where Miquel Giró brewed its Golden, Brown and White, some 500 litres a week in 2018. & (And), set up in Santa Coloma in 2018 by Ivan Garcia, the first Andorran graduate of the Basque Culinary Center, made 2,200 litres a month within months of its start.
In 2024 the country had three craft breweries, Alpha, Boris and & And, all brewing with mountain water and buying their malt, hops and yeast abroad; already in 2018 they were waiting for a rule against beers sold as Andorran but brewed in Catalonia. The German brewer Heiko Kirchner, who has lived in Andorra for 26 years, brews as a nomad in rented brewhouses; his Weißbier Única Vanessa won a bronze medal at the Barcelona Beer Festival in 2026.
