How it works
Traces back to a brewery founded in 1788 by the innkeeper François Piller in the Lower Town of Fribourg. Paul-Alcide Blancpain took it over in 1877 and called it Brasserie du Cardinal in 1890, when Bishop Gaspard Mermillod became a cardinal; it moved to the Pérolles plateau in 1904 and became a joint-stock company in 1907. The Sibra holding was formed around it and the Beauregard brewery in 1970 and Feldschlösschen bought Sibra in 1991. A closure announced in 1996 was dropped, but Carlsberg decided in 2010 to close it and Cardinal moved to Rheinfelden in 2011; the canton and city of Fribourg bought the site on 1 June 2012 for CHF 21.5 million. unverified info
