## About

Traces itself to the Phoenix Brewery at Reefton, where Stewart Monteith joined as head brewer in 1868. Phoenix and breweries at Hokitika and Kumara merged in 1927 as Westland Breweries, run from Greymouth; the central Greymouth brewery began in 1949 and the Reefton brewery made its last beer in 1963. Dominion Breweries took over in 1969 (DB Westland Breweries) and in 1990 renamed it Monteith's Brewing Company, adding 'since 1868' to the label. Closure was announced on 22 March 2001 and reversed four days later after protests; the rebuilt brewery reopened on 25 July 2012. In November 2020 DB proposed to move commercial production to its other breweries and keep the Greymouth gastropub.
