Brewery
back Bryggeri Fredrikstad

Country: no Norway
Closed in 2000 — no longer brewing at its old place

Founded on 12 June 1877 by a group of mill owners from the stone and timber trades, with Carl Johan Christopher Kiønig as manager until 1920; 55 shares were issued for 220,000 kroner. The brewery stood in Bydalen at Glemmen by the Bingdammene ponds, which gave the water and, in winter, the ice. In 1880 it signed a contract to sell beer for export through a Hamburg firm, and in Africa the beer was sold as Giraffe-Beer. Mineral water began in 1901. In 1917 it stopped brewing pils, bayer and bock and made weaker beers instead. It took over Fredriksstad Centralbryggeri in 1928, was merged into Borg Bryggerier in 1989 and so became part of Hansa Borg in 1997. Brewing in Fredrikstad ended in 2000 (Store norske leksikon) or 2001 (Wikipedia); the brand lived on for a pilsner and a Christmas beer brewed at Borg in Sarpsborg. unverified info
