United Kingdom The brewing firm of the Cobbold family of Ipswich, founded at Harwich in 1723 by Thomas Cobbold and moved to Ipswich in 1746, where it brewed at the Cliff Brewery; the present tower brewery there dates from 1896. It was registered as Cobbold & Co. in 1924 and owned 236 pubs. In 1957 it merged with Tollemache Breweries to form Tolly Cobbold. Ridley's bought Tolly Cobbold in 2002 and closed the Cliff Brewery. unverified info
