## About

Karl Heinrich Schulz financed the Kyiv breweries that were united in 1886 as the Karl Schulz brewery; 1881 is taken as the start of Brewery No. 1, but archives show a brewery at the Demiivka site in 1823, and perhaps from 1809-1811. The Schulz family held it from 1865 until December 1914, when it was sequestered; it made soft drinks under the wartime dry law. Nationalised and numbered No. 1 (No. 2 was the Podil plant, No. 3 Obolon), it was the only Kyiv brewery that worked without a break, later belonged to the Sarmat group and stopped production in 2003; it was declared bankrupt in autumn 2009.
