United Kingdom Founded in 1757 by John Whitwell at Kendal; William Mark bought the business and built a new brewery in 1858 (1853 in other accounts), and the firm became a private company in 1883. Vaux Breweries took it over in 1947 with 30 tied houses and brewing ceased on 18 September 1968; the buildings became the Brewery Arts Centre, which opened in 1972. unverified info
