How it works
Founded in 1858 by the Irishman Robert Cain, who bought a Liverpool brewery on Stanhope Street and had 200 pubs within 25 years. It merged with Walker of Warrington in 1921 as Walker Cains and sold the Stanhope Street brewery to Higsons in 1923; Boddingtons took over in 1985 and Whitbread closed the site in 1990. The brewery reopened in the 1990s and Faxe sold it in 2002 to the Dusanj brothers; debts of more than £8m closed it in 2013. The Cains name was reportedly bought in 2018 for the Cains Brewery Village on the same street. unverified info
