How it works
Founded in 1758 as the Backhouse & Hartley Brewery in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire; it claims to be the oldest brewery in Yorkshire. John Smith bought it in 1847, and Samuel Smith refitted it in 1886 after his uncle had moved the plant to the new John Smith's brewery next door. It uses Yorkshire square fermenters of Welsh slate and delivers locally by dray horse. The company became an unlimited company in 1982; its owner Humphrey Smith died on 29 June 2026. unverified info
