How it works
Founded in 1806 by Cuthbert Vaux in Sunderland; its brands were Vaux Stout, Maxim, Double Maxim and Sunderland Best Bitter. It bought Wards of Sheffield in 1972. In March 1999 the board decided to close both breweries despite their profit, and the Sunderland and Sheffield breweries closed on 2 July 1999; the company became the Swallow Group and Whitbread took it over in 2000. unverified info
