How it works
Founded in 1934 (the 90th anniversary was marked on 21 June 2024) as Sociedade Central de Cervejas to sell the beers of four older companies, Portugália, Estrela, Coimbra and Jansen; the Trindade brewery of 1836 joined in 1935. Sagres was launched in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition and Imperial in 1941; the Vialonga brewery opened in 1968. Merged with Cergal in 1977 as Centralcer, privatised in 1990; Scottish & Newcastle held 49% from 2000 and all of it from 2003; Heineken has controlled it since 29 April 2008. Sagres, Sagres Bohemia and the Bandida do Pomar cider are made at Vialonga. unverified info
