How it works
Founded in 1876 on Rattray Street, Dunedin, by James Speight, Charles Greenslade and William Dawson, who had left Wellpark Brewery. A gold medal at the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880 gave Gold Medal Ale its name; the largest brewery in the country by 1887, exporting to Australia and the Pacific Islands. Merged into New Zealand Breweries in 1923; Lion has owned it since 1977, and since 2001 Speight's is also brewed at Lion's Newmarket brewery in Auckland.
