How it works
John Courage and friends bought the Anchor Brewhouse at Horsleydown, Bermondsey, London, on 20 December 1787. Courage bought many breweries to gain pubs, among them Alton Brewery (1903), and was sold to Imperial Tobacco in 1972 for £320 million. Scottish & Newcastle bought Courage in 1995, and the Courage brands went to Wells & Young's in 2007. The Anchor Brewhouse is now flats. unverified info
