United Kingdom Founded by Paul Theakston in Masham, North Yorkshire, in 1991-1992, after the Theakston family lost control of T&R Theakston; the brewery is in the former Lightfoot maltings and its first beer, Black Sheep Best Bitter, was sold at the Bruce Arms. It became a public limited company in 1992. After going into administration on 2 May 2023 it was bought by the investment firm Breal Capital in May 2023 with its pubs and visitor centre.
