Taiwan The state-owned Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation, formed on 1 July 2002 from the Monopoly Bureau. The Bureau took over the Takasago Malted Beer Company of Taipei (formed in January 1919, first beer in June 1920) in 1945 and sold its beer as Taiwan Beer from 1946; ponlai rice went into the recipe in the 1960s. Taiwan Beer is brewed at four plants: the Jianguo (Taipei) Brewery on the old Takasago site, Wuri near Taichung (1966), Shanhua near Tainan (1973) and Zhunan in Miaoli.
