How it works
Brewery on the Carrick Road in Dundalk, County Louth, that began brewing in 1896 and became the second largest in Ireland. It was bought by Smithwick's of Kilkenny in the late 1950s and then by Guinness (now Diageo), and in 1960 it was converted to lager and made Harp Lager, with the German brewer Dr Hermann Muender. Diageo announced its closure on 9 May 2008; all brewing ceased on 30 September 2013 and Harp moved to St James's Gate. The site became the Great Northern Distillery, which began distilling on 31 July 2015. unverified info
