The brewing business grew out of the South African Breweries brewery at Ndola (May 1951) and Northern Breweries, formed in 1963 by SAB (80%) and Labatt (20%) with plants at Ndola and Lusaka; the government nationalised it in 1968 and split it into Zambian Breweries (Lusaka) and Northern Breweries (Ndola), and the company dates itself from 1968. Privatised from 1994 and listed on the Lusaka Securities Exchange in 1997, it bought Northern Breweries (Ndola, with Rhino Lager) in 1999 and has been part of AB InBev since it took over SABMiller on 10 October 2016. It brews at Mungwi Road in Lusaka and at Ndola, with a maltings in Lusaka South (2017); a US$104 million Lusaka expansion was finished in December 2023.
