Formally started on 27 July 1946 by East African Breweries of Kenya, at Luzira beside Port Bell on Lake Victoria; Bell Lager, the first beer, came off the line in 1950. EABL bought a stake in 1959; the state took the company over in the 1970s (1974 or 1976) and gave it back to EABL in 1984. Diageo has controlled EABL since 2000; in December 2025 it agreed to sell its 65 per cent to Asahi, a deal still awaiting completion in September 2026.
