How it works
A consortium of Unibra of Belgium (40%), Phoenix Beverages of Mauritius (40%) and Proparco, the development-finance arm of the French AFD (20%), formed around 2000 to break the monopoly of the Star breweries. It built a brewery at Mahazina near Ambatolampy from 2007; ready in April 2009, it waited about a year and a half for its licence and brewed Skol, later also the abbey-style Libertalia. Bought by the Star group in May 2014, when it was close to bankruptcy, and rebuilt: reopened on 3 December 2021 as Star's Ambatolampy factory, 1.9 million hl a year of all drinks. unverified info
