Brewing in Cluj goes back to the brewery of the Monastery Estate (Mănăștur), working by the early 1800s; the modern brewery dates its start to 1878, the first real brewery in Transylvania. The Czell family of Brașov, the last lessees, bought it around 1900, the light beer took the name Ursus in June 1924, the firm Ursus Fabrica de Bere S.A. was set up in 1927, and the plant was nationalized in 1948; in 1974 it brewed 424,000 hl. It became a joint-stock company in 1992 and passed to South African Breweries (SABMiller) in 1997. SABMiller stopped brewing in Cluj in 2010, moving production to Buzău, Brașov and Timișoara, and the old buildings were pulled down from March 2013; the craft brewery Barlog now stands on the site. unverified info
