Cervecería Polar, C.A., the beer company of Empresas Polar: Lorenzo Mendoza Fleury set it up with Rafael Luján and Karl Eggers, and it began brewing on 14 March 1941 at Antímano, west of Caracas. The Czechoslovak brewmaster Carlos Roubicek changed the recipe in 1943. Plants followed at Barcelona (1950), Los Cortijos in Caracas (1951), Maracaibo (1960) and San Joaquín, Carabobo (1978). It held about 79 per cent of the volume in 2012. Its four breweries stopped in April 2016 for lack of imported barley malt, and a USD 35 million loan for malt and hops was announced on 1 June 2016.
