How it works
Founded in 1951 at Njeru near Jinja, by the Owen Falls Dam, by expatriates working on the dam; after the dam was finished in 1954 it was sold to the Madhvani group (Uganda Business News gives 1957 and Muljibhai Madhvani). The state took it over in 1972 after the expulsion of the Asians, and the Madhvanis had it back by 1992. South African Breweries bought 40 per cent in 1997 and more in 2001; part of SABMiller, and of AB InBev since 2016. A second brewery opened at Mbarara in October 2013; Jinja can brew over 1.9 million hectolitres. Nile Special, Club Pilsener, Nile Gold and Eagle (a sorghum lager since 2002). unverified info
