How it works
Formed in 1988 when Lion Breweries, the northern division of New Zealand Breweries (named Lion Breweries in 1977), took over the retailer L. D. Nathan. In 1990 it took control of Bond Corporation's Australian breweries. Kirin of Japan bought most of Douglas Myers' share in 1998 and the whole company in 2009; called Lion since 2011. Lion New Zealand is the largest alcohol company in the country (about 1,000 staff), with Speight's, Steinlager, Mac's and Emerson's; it bought Harrington's in July 2018. Steinlager is brewed at East Tamaki, Auckland. unverified info
